Divorce may stem from certain personality traits

Whether in San Antonio or elsewhere, several factors can lead the decision to end a marriage. However, according to experts, one of the divorce factors that is frequently overlooked is people’s personality traits. Two personality traits that can be particularly problematic are conflict anxiety and narcissism.

Conflict anxiety is where a person chooses to avoid conflict. The reality is that when spouses are not afraid to argue with one another, this is typically a positive thing, as it shows that they are okay with discussing difficult issues — specifically if one party feels that the other one has wronged him or her in some way. However, if couples fight too much, this is just as problematic as if they fight too little.

Narcissism is also considered a predictor of divorce because people who are narcissists are likely to blame other people for their behavior, instead of assuming responsibility for it. This can lead to marital conflict. Over time, this conflict can breed strong resentment in the spouse who has to deal with the other party’s self-centered attitude.

People choose to get divorced for a variety of reasons. However, no matter what their reasons may be, the divorce process itself can take a toll on them emotionally as well as financially. Fortunately, though, couples in San Antonio and throughout Texas can usually make the marital breakup process easier for themselves by trying to resolve their divorce issues through direct negotiations or divorce mediation, for example. Still, whether a couple end up going through an alternative dispute resolution process or going to trial in family court, an attorney can help to pursue an outcome that is ultimately in the best interests of the client.
