Divorce rate drops among millennials

On Behalf of | May 30, 2019 | Divorce |

Research shows that members of the millennial generation in San Antonio are not getting divorced at the same rate as their parents did. In fact, this generation has fueled a 24% drop in the divorce rate since 1981. Experts predict that this decline will only continue during the next few decades.

Part of the reason for the drop in the divorce rate is that millennials are fearful about experiencing a marital breakup. This may be because they saw their parents get divorced and would like to avoid having unstable marriages themselves. To achieve this, they may be quick to date or have sex with other people, as well as cohabitate with their romantic partners, while being slow to actually tie the knot.

In fact, according to recent research, millennials are dragging out their relationships longer prior to getting married — nearly five years on average. In addition, they are waiting to marry until they are older. Currently in the United States, the median age for women to marry is 27, and for men, it is 29, and around 25% will never get married.

Divorce can certainly be a tough situation to go through both emotionally and financially. Unfortunately, no matter how hard couples work to avoid going through divorce, this process is not always avoidable. However, a family law attorney in San Antonio can provide a divorcing individual with the guidance he or she needs to pursue the most personally beneficial outcome when dealing with matters such as property division and spousal maintenance in the Lone Star State.
